The meeting venue is the Williamsburg Marriott, a first-class, full-service hotel located in Virginia's Historic Triangle.  Colonial Williamsburg is a living history site providing visitors with many opportunities to explore 18th century colonial life.

Entering the United States

Normally, foreign travelers must possess a passport and U.S. Visitor Visa (B-1). Twenty-six countries are currently participating in the Visa Waiver Pilot Program (including Australia, France, Germany, Switzerland, UK, Japan) and do not require a Visa for visits under 90 days. Visa applications are processed through the American Embassy or Consulate in one's country of residence.  Applicants may submit the GSC-5/RAST-8 invitation as documentation for purpose of travel.

Washington Dulles International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (Washington, DC) are located 241 kilometers (150 miles - 3 hours by car) north of Williamsburg.  There is Amtrak train service from Union Station in downtown Washington, DC, to Williamsburg.

All airports provide rental car service, shuttle service, limousine service, and taxi service.

Meeting Registration

The registration table for the GSC-5/RAST-8 meeting will be open Sunday, August 22, from 1300-1700 hours, and Monday, August 23, from 0700-1300 hours.

Upon registration, attendees will receive a name badge, CD-ROM containing the meeting agendas and all documents, along with information brochures on local area tourist attractions.

Hardware and Software

Guestrooms are equipped with a 2-line telephone, voicemail, and a data port. International telephone service is available from all hotel rooms and all charges will either be billed to your room account or, if your service provider provides access within the USA, billing may be rendered by your service provider.  Normally, telephone service billed directly from a service provider is less expensive than services billed by the hotel to you room account.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE STANDARD ELECTRICAL CURRENT/OUTLET IN THE UNITED STATES OPERATES WITH 110v-120v, 60Hz, AC.  ELECTRICAL OUTLETS (see diagram) ACCEPT THE LEAF-TYPE, TWO-PRONG FLAT BLADE PLUG (UL-listed two-wire plus safety ground physical configuration). PLEASE BRING ADAPTERS, IF NEEDED.  DATA/PHONE PORTS ACCEPT RJ-11 PLUGS.

Participants are expected to bring laptop computer equipped with:

  • CD ROM drive
  • 3.5" floppy disk drive
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
Attire

Typical casual dress for men is slacks (trousers) and a collared shirt (no jacket or tie).  Casual dress for women is slacks and a blouse or a simple linen or cotton dress.

Business attire is expected only for the Monday and Wednesday evening dinners.

Climate

The summer season in the Williamsburg area is hot and humid.  The average high temperature for August in Williamsburg is 30° C (87°F); the average low is 18°C (65°F).

Credit Cards and Currency

The hotel, restaurants, and most tour sites accept the following major credit cards: VISA, American Express, MasterCard.  Please check your credit cards to verify they are affiliated with these brands (for example, the Eurocard is a MasterCard affiliate).  Travelers' Checks written in USD ($) denominations are also accepted at many locations.

Crestar Bank is the ONLY bank in the Williamsburg area that provides currency exchange for a limited number of foreign currencies.  Norfolk International Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, and Richmond International Airport all have full-service foreign currency exchanges.
