ATIS Releases IPTV Packet Loss Report

February 28, 2007, Washington, DC – ATIS announced today the release of the IPTV Packet Loss Issue Report (ATIS-0800005), developed by the ATIS IPTV Interoperability Forum (IIF). The IPTV Packet Loss Issue Report reviews many of the factors that may cause packet loss in IPTV transmissions and addresses solutions to mitigate packet drop.

Packet loss can occur due to a number of causes along the path of the IPTV service including the following: electrical interference in the operator’s network; e lectrical interference in the home network (e.g., wireless); packet discard mechanisms in network equipment; and consumer electronics (CE) network equipment response to transient commercial power events. The IPTV Packet Loss Issue Report evaluates a number of options for addressing packet loss including retransmission options, forward error control options, and packet loss and error concealment methods. The report contains a detailed description of how Forward Error Correction (FEC) can be applied for IPTV, providing results showing FEC bandwidth requirements and latency trade-offs for certain use cases. Additionally, it offers an analysis of the latency and bandwidth used for real time retransmission in concealing errors in an access network.

The IPTV Packet Loss Issue Report is available on the ATIS Document Center found at www.atis.org.

About the ATIS IPTV Interoperability Forum (IIF)

The IIF develops ATIS standards and related technical activities that enable the interoperability, interconnection and implementation of IPTV systems and services, including video on demand and interactive TV services.

More than 50 ATIS member companies are actively engaged in ATIS’ IPTVstandardization efforts through the ATIS IIF, including Verizon, Qwest, BellSouth, AT&T, Bell Canada, BT, Alcatel, Siemens, Nortel, Cisco, Motorola, Intel, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems, among others. The ATIS IIF was formed at the recommendation of an IPTV Exploratory Group to the ATIS Board of Directors.
