ATIS Releases New RFID Guideline for Product, Product Package and Transport Unit Tagging

November 3, 2008, Washington – ATIS announced today the release of a new standard, the RFID Guideline for Product, Product Package and Transport Unit Tagging ( ATIS-0300096), created by the Bar Code/Standard Coding (BCSC) Committee. This new guideline provides recommended information to be placed in RFID tags the telecommunications industry uses for supply chain management purposes. Specifically, it details the content and format of the RFID product, product package, returnable containers, and transport unit (“shipping”) tags that could be incorporated into labels as specified in existing BCSC standards (i.e., ATIS 03-00006, Implementation Guide for Package Labeling and ATIS 03-00038, Product Marking Implementation Guideline).

“Since most telecommunications companies are just starting to consider implementing RFID,” said Susan Miller, President and CEO of ATIS, “this new ATIS standard provides these a much-needed starting point for a tag format that will optimize the use of this innovative new technology.”

The new RFID standard provides telecommunications equipment manufacturers, suppliers and service providers with a format for tags that complies with global standards. The new standard is available through the ATIS Document Center at: https://www.atis.org/docstore/. The Document Center is the leading online resource for published and pre-published telecommunication standards, as well as technical reports, requirements, and guidelines produced by ATIS-sponsored industry forums and committees.

About the BCSC
The ATIS BCSC establishes guidelines for common shipping labels, product marking labels, product changes and software issuance standards. These common guidelines simplify the receiving, shipping, transportation and tracing of telecommunications products through company and industry business processes and the global supply chain.
