ATIS Revises Functional Requirements and Architecture Related to Usage Data for Packet-Based Services

August 27, 2008, Washington – ATIS announced the release of updates to a Technical Report entitled Usage Data Management for Packet–Based Services, Service-Neutral Architecture, and Protocol Requirements (ATIS-0300075). The latest revisions to the original report, first published in July 2005 and updated in July 2008, provide updates to create an independent usage information model in response to a need for a reliable, fast, efficient and flexible accounting protocol.

ATIS’ Telecom Management and Operations Committee (TMOC) developed the high level architecture for an accounting management mechanism in order to facilitate the changing business requirements of service providers. Existing mechanisms for exporting information do not adequately support evolving accounting and non-accounting applications and fail to allow for the interchange of usage among data networks.

The updates to ATIS-0300075 put forth functional requirements and architecture protocols that can be applied to a range of business applications across various packet-based technologies in accordance with ITU-T recommendation Y.2233. More specifically, the updates specify a high-level architecture that will integrate technical information and data both within a single enterprise and across multiple enterprises. It also will facilitate the flow of information from IP Network Elements and/or Service Elements.

“Service-neutral or service independent architecture offers flexibility that is key to facilitating the flow of usage information,” stated Susan Miller, President and CEO of ATIS. “Standardization of the protocols and architecture will help meet the real-time and high-performance requirements of today’s data networks.”

Usage Data Management for Packet–Based Services, Service-Neutral Architecture, and Protocol Requirements (ATIS-0300075) is available through the ATIS Document Center at: https://www.atis.org/docstore/product.aspx?id=22688.
