ATIS Reacts to National Broadband Plan

March 31, 2010, Washington, DC – The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) recently released its reaction to the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) National Broadband Plan (NBP).

“Widespread broadband access is fundamental to our nation’s – and our industry’s – continued global leadership. The Commission’s continued support of collaborative, consensus-based and industry-driven solutions will ensure the Plan’s ultimate realization and success,” said Susan Miller, ATIS’ President and CEO.

ATIS notes the significant technical work required to make the proposed plan a reality. Areas including e911, cybersecurity, network reliability, and sustainability must be comprehensively addressed to ensure the plan’s successful implementation.

Further, much of ATIS’ ongoing work is directly applicable to, and potentially impacted by, the proposed Plan. For example, the NBP includes recommendations addressing the broadband ecosystem’s network services, devices, applications, and content. These recommendations might potentially impact ATIS’ work in the areas of network services, network management, IPTV, data privacy, and fraud prevention. Further, the NBP also recommends focusing on broadband’s ability to bolster public safety improvement efforts, cybersecurity, and access to emergency services. Given ATIS’ significant work in these areas, the Plan’s recommendations could potentially reshape existing work programs, and spur the creation of new ATIS initiatives.
