On September 21-22, 2004, ATIS hosted the Network Security Symposium and Workshop. The purpose of this Workshop was to assemble security experts from across the industry, to include government and academia, to discuss and propose next steps on two critical network security issues identified by the ATIS TOPS Security Issues Focus Group.
Roundtable #1, Addressing Security Exposures in Messaging Models, explored the security vulnerabilities and risks of unwanted emails, Short Message Service (SMS) and Instant Messaging (IM).
Roundtable #2, Application Protocol Traversal of Network Boundaries in a Controlled and Predictable Fashion, explored the impediments and security risks of crossing network boundaries owned or managed by different organizations.
The resulting discussion points and next-steps from the roundtables have been forwarded to the TOPS Security Issues Focus Group for detailed assessment, clarification and subsequent action by the TOPS Council.
Background
The ATIS TOPS Council created the Security Issues Focus Group
to establish an industry standardization work plan to address
critical security issues for the deployment of next generation
networks and services. The Network Security Work Plan -- released
in June 2004 to key ATIS committees -- identifies, assesses, and
recommends specific actions and timelines to create a suite of
standards for end-to-end solutions for 18 IP-based network security
issues. The Network Security Symposium and Workshop is the first
public forum of the Security Issues Work Plan with government
and industry and an opportunity for key SDOs and industry experts
to work together to create a standard for these priority issues.
