IPTV offers mainly evolutionary changes over traditional TV (cable, satellite, etc.). The underlying technology may be revolutionary, but the services being offered are just extending the services already available from existing providers. At the same time, consumer electronics, Over the Top (OTT) and Internet providers are making their own moves onto the TV screen, threatening to leapfrog IPTV efforts.
During this session, examples of new technologies that impact how IPTV is delivered and interfaced with are offered as pointers towards where IPTV should be moving to truly differentiate itself from traditional TV delivery systems and from non-traditional competitors. Categories to be discussed and demonstrated include: new Interfaces to the TV; new applications on the TV enabled by these interfaces; IPTV’s role as the center of a smart home; and IPTV’s role in messaging, social networking and alerting.
